Match Report from Tony Armstrong:-
After nine games without a League victory, Harwich & Parkeston bounced back in fine style with a very impressive 3-1 victory against Barkingside, a team much higher in the League. It was an opening victory for caretaker Manager Michael Wallace who has temporarly taken over the hot seat after the departure of Kieron Shelley last week. The result was even more impressive considering that several key players were missing and Harwich did not have a recognised central defender available forcing Nicky Palmer and Tom O'Keefe to take up the role in the middle of the back four and how well the pair performed!. The pitch was extremely poor yet again and it was clear from the outset that good passing movement was going to be difficult due to the very uneven and bumpy surface and commitment in winning the ball in key areas vital. Harwich certainly won that midfield control in the match and in fact probably won most of the battles all over the pitch.
The Shrimpers got a brilliant start taking a 5th minute lead. A great cross from Rory Harman, playing in the accustomed role at right back, found Sean Bartlett at the far post and after one touch he got excellent control before volleying into the net with an unstoppable shot. Harwich had two more good efforts saved when two good headers brought the best out of the home goalkeeper. Barkingside were a very useful team which meant Harwich had to work hard at times to prevent an equaliser and Sam Felgate had to be alert to save well when a home forward raced through to block the effort. However on the half hour the home side did level the scores. A corner was swung into the six yard box which was not attacked by the Harwich defence and the ball eventually crossed the line with the Harwich defenders appealing for hand ball and a foul on the Shrimpers keeper Felgate. The interval saw Harwich introduce Ross Purll to replace Elliot Fay and certainly the Shrimpers looked the better team in the second period. Jake Kioussis struck the post from a free kick and Matt Geen was unfortunate when a goal was ruled out for a foul. It certainly came as no surprise when the Harwich pressure resulted in regaining the lead. A good forward ball was flicked on by Matt Geen to Harry Banner who headed home in brilliant fashion givng the keeper no chance. In the 75th minute Harwich increased the lead. Ross Purll worked the well down the right hand side before cutting in to send in a perfect cross where young Harry Banner netted his second and secured an excellent Harwich result. This was a superb all round team performance against a very useful Barkingside outfit and hopefully if the same endeavour can be consistent, it should not be long before they start moving up the League table.
