Harwich attacked in the 7th minute but the Woodford goalkeeper was able to collect Louie Bloom's header. Five minutes later the ball was dribbled past Shrimpers goalkeeper Will Healy and with the goal open, Charlie Canham appeared, making a last ditch tackle, saving his team from going behind.
Next it was Healy's turn to make a good stop from a close range header in the 23rd minute.
A minute later, Woodford took the lead when a move down their right flank saw Shrimpers full back Jerimiah Ajisafe unusually beaten for pace and when the ball ball was squared, Town's striker Ollie Sotoyinbo scored a tap in goal.
On the half hour Shrimpers striker Jake Gordon tried an ambitious shot from the edge of the penalty box that cleared the crossbar.
In the 45th minute of normal time, Woodford scored a goal that looked offside when a deep through ball found its way to Sotoyinbo, who again tapped it into the net and the officials allowed the goal to stand.
Four minutes into the second half, Woodford were reduced to 10 men when a high tackle on Ajisafe resulted in a red card.
On the hour, Healy again saved well from a shot taken from the edge of the penalty area.
With 15 minutes of normal time remaining, Woodford scored their 3rd goal when the ball was cut back to Sotoyinbo, who curled his shot around a standing defender for a superb finish that gave Healy no chance.
After a further 4 minutes another dangerous Woodford cross was headed home by Sotoyinbo for his and Town's fourth goal.
In the closing stages, Harwich scored a consolation goal when Gordon provided a good cross for Ajisafe to net with a well taken shot.
