Harwich made a bright start with Hackney Wick goalkeeper Tyron Osadolor saving well from Leo Carty's fierce shot.
Wick came back and had a good chance but Shrimpers goalkeeper Will Healy managed to parry the shot.
Harwich's new signing Jake Gordon was adding finesse to their midfield and also went close with a shot.
With 20 minutes gone, Harwich mounted a good move with Joe Knight a whisker away from providing the finishing touch.
Following good work by Jenson Goode, it was Knight (pictured) who gave Harwich the lead when, from 25 yards, he fired in a super shot that nestled sweetly in the corner of the net.
Just before half time, Hackney Wick beat the Shrimpers' offside trap but shot over the crossbar.
For Harwich, Carty was a threat down the right flank and in the second half he flashed in a shot that went just past the post.
Harwich were without Gordon now and with the midfield lacking his flair, Hackney Wick were looking the more dangerous.
The Shrimpers were battling hard to hang onto their lead but when Healy was forced to come off his line, from a wide angle, Kennedy Feyi shot low into the far corner of the net to equalise for Hackney Wick.

Wick's tails were up now and they were looking for the winner.
However, in the last 10 minutes Harwich came back strongly. From Tiwa Odufuye's cross, Lewis Wood's powerful header looked destined for the corner of the net but Osadolor pulled off a stunning, acrobatic diving catch to thwart the central defender.
Next, it was Shrimpers keeper Healy's turn to save his side with his feet when Wick were clean through and looked certain to score.
In the closing minutes, Harwich came closest to snatching all 3 points when from another good Odufuye cross, Carty's close-range shot went agonisingly inches past the post.
Late on, Osadolor handled just outside his penalty area but he managed to dive low to push out Joe Wood's free kick.
An exciting finish to a match that finished honours even.
