REPORT BY COLIN ROGERS
Harwich started brightly and in the 5th minute, Jack Wood - making his 150th appearance for the club - headed just over the crossbar from a Gareth Heath free kick.
Two minutes later they mounted another dangerous attack, initiated by Jamie Eveleigh, who made a good run down the right flank before crossing the ball to Joe Knight whose goalbound header was deflected by a defender at the expense of a corner kick.
Newham then came back into the game with their two speedy wide players threatening but Harwich defended well under pressure.
With 20 minutes gone. Newham took the lead following a corner kick which swung in towards the far post where Carvalho was well positioned to head home.
In the closing 10 minutes of the first half, Harwich enjoyed a purple patch. Joe Knight's well-placed through ball found Alfie Canning and from his fierce shot the home goalkeeper did well to push the ball out for a corner. The Shrimpers' efforts were rewarded with an equalising goal when, from an Eveleigh corner, Knight (pictured) stabbed the ball into the net from close range.
There was time for one more chance before the interval with Knight, back to his best form, supplying another good through pass to put Eveleigh in one-on-one with the keeper, but his shot went outside the post.
Newham came out strong for the second half but the Shrimpers weathered the early storm and in the 50th minute returned to the attack with Canning shooting just wide.
With an hour of the match gone, Harwich took the lead with a really well-worked goal. Full-back Tiwa Odufuye made a 60-yard run down the left flank, beating two defenders before laying the ball back to Canning, who crossed first time for Knight to get across the defence and give the keeper no chance with his finishing shot.
Athletic's best attack produced an excellent shot on goal from which Shrimpers goalkeeper Brad Cook pulled off an equally fine save, diving full length to turn the ball around the post.
Harwich finished the game strongly with Alfie Eldridge crossing for Knight to head just over and later substitutes Zac Pedro and Liam White combining for White's shot to go inches past the post.
