Harwich end six-match winless league run

Harwich end six-match winless league run

Terry Francis22 Nov - 23:10

Three points gained by the Shrimpers from a 2-1 win over Hullbridge Sports were so important, lifting their spirits, whilst keeping them safe in 14th spot.

Report by Terry Francis and Colin Rogers

With the visitors just below Harwich in the Essex Senior League table, this match was a real 'six-pointer'.
The Shrimpers started on the front foot with their first chance coming when Luke Mayhew crossed for Louie Bloom to have his shot well saved by goalkeeper William Eastwood.
Mayhew broke free again to and crossed for Zachary Pedro (pictured), whose shot beat the diving Eastwood and gave Harwich a deserved lead.
Mayhew was giving the Hullbridge defence lots of problems, this time finding Shaun Avis who fired just past the post. Hullbridge also had a shot that curled just wide of the far post before Mayhew created a chance for himself but his shot went into the side netting.
Although Harwich had been dominant, they went in at half time with just a slender one-goal advantage.
Early in the second half, Shrimpers goalkeeper Brad Cook had to make a scrambled diving save, whilst at the other end Eastwood excelled by diving to turn Bloom's shot out for a corner kick.
With 65 minutes gone, Harwich increased their lead when full-back Tom Watkins passed the ball down the touchline for Mayhew's cross to be cleared to Pedro, who stroked his shot neatly into the corner of the net for his second goal.
Bloom was a powerhouse for Harwich and from his clever back-heel, Mayhew's dangerous cross was well blocked. Teenage substitute Jack Milne worked hard and from his excellent cross Mayhew shot inches over the bar.
With 8 minutes remaining, Hullbridge got back in the game when a ball down the middle was not dealt with by the Harwich defence, forcing Cook to advance, and when he was beaten, Ellis Devereux was able to tap the ball into the empty net.
Harwich had seemed to have the points wrapped up but now had to play out the remaining nervous minutes before they could celebrate a morale-boosting victory.
Harwich team: Brad Cook, Tom Watkins, Oakley McNair, Jack Wood, Reece Harte, Gareth Heath, Alfie Canning, Luke Mayhew, Zachary Pedro, Louie Bloom and Shaun Avis. Substitutes: Jack Milne, Tyler Sullivan, Liam White (all used), Tiwa Odufuye and John Watkins (not used).
