PROMOTION-CHASING WOODFORD BRING HARWICH DOWN TO EARTH

PROMOTION-CHASING WOODFORD BRING HARWICH DOWN TO EARTH

Terry Francis1 Nov - 22:29

THE SHRIMPERS WERE BUOYED BY A MIDWEEK CUP WIN BUT FOUND TOWN A TOUGH NUT TO CRACK AND WENT DOWN TO A 3-0 DEFEAT

REPORT BY DANIEL ROGERS

Harwich made a promising start with two scoring chances in the first 10 minutes. Only 2 minutes had gone when Zac Pedro was gifted the ball by the Woodford defence but shot wide. Six minutes later, Shrimpers skipper Gareth Heath (pictured) looped a dangerous ball in and Freddy Cooper headed over the crossbar.
Woodford came back, forcing Shrimpers goalkeeper Brad Cook to produce a good save at the near post.
In the 20th minute, Woodford took the lead when David Gokou-Siadkouri cut in from the left flank and from 20 yards netted with a well-taken shot.
Harwich won a free kick in the 38th minute but when this was unproductive, Woodford made a smart counter with Gokou-Siadkouri breaking away to travel 40 yards with the ball, dribble past Cook and net Town's second goal.
A minute later, Shrimper Alfie Canning skilfully laid on a chance for Pedro to reduce the arrears but his shot went just wide.
Just before the half-time whistle, the hosts missed a golden chance when a great cross by-passed the Harwich defence only for an attacker to shoot over the crossbar.
A well-worked cross in the 50th minute saw Harwich in trouble and Woodford net their 3rd goal.
Within the next 12 minutes, Cook made two first-class saves, the first a great stop low down and another low at the near post.
It was a mountain for Harwich to climb now but they kept trying, with their best effort coming after 75 minutes when Luke Mayhew's fierce shot from 25 yards went inches over the crossbar.
The victory takes Woodford to second place in the league table; Harwich remain 12th but are now without a win in five in the league. They return to action in two weeks' time, away to Hackney Wick, who play at Witham.
Harwich team: Brad Cook, Tom Watkins, Charlie Canham, Freddy Cooper, Reece Harte, Alfie Eldridge, Gareth Heath, Alfie Canning, Louie Bloom, Zac Pedro and Shaun Avis. Substitutes: Tiwa Odufuye, Luke Mayhew, Tyler Sullivan and Liam White (all used).
