HARWICH BATTLE HARD TO SECURE A POINT

HARWICH BATTLE HARD TO SECURE A POINT

Terry Francis4 Oct - 21:30

THE SHRIMPERS STARTED AS FAVOURITES AND ENJOYED AN EXCELLENT START TO THE MATCH BUT ATHLETIC NEWHAM WERE GOOD VALUE FOR THEIR SHARE OF THE SPOILS

Harwich took the lead within the opening ten minutes with a moment of magic.
Zachary Pedro broke away down the left flank and provided the perfect cross for the on-coming Luke Mayhew (pictured) to show good footwork to beat goalkeeper Harvey Simson in a one-on-one situation.
Five minutes later, Athletic had a good chance when a cross was headed over from close range.
Newham belied their lowly league position and came back to have a good share of possession and Harwich were happy to go in at half time leading by the only goal.
Harwich hopes were raised on the hour when Tyler Sullivan played in Pedro with a really good through ball but the Shrimpers wing-man was marginally offside.

Athletic's accurate close passing football was much better suited to the strong windy conditions than the Shrimpers style of play with Harwich central defenders, Jack Wood and Charlie Canham, doing well to keep their team in the lead. Canham made a really important last-ditch tackle when Remarle Lawrence was bearing down on goal.
Lawrence was impressive for the visitors and when he sent over a dangerous cross Samuel Devine missed a golden chance to net.
Newham were pushing Harwich and deservedly equalised in the 83rd minute when they won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area and although the Shrimpers managed to block the first effort, Enzo Sanchez followed up to net.
The draw takes Harwich's unbeaten run to 5 matches and means that they are in 9th position in the league table, 3 points outside the play-off places.
Harwich team: Brad Cook, Tom Watkins, Jack Wood, Charlie Canham, Tiwa Odufuye, Tyler Sullivan, Alfie Canning, Zackary Pedro, Luke Mayhew, Louie Bloom and Shaun Avis. Substitutes: Alfie Eldridge (used), Ted Johnson, Gareth Heath, James Letts, Freddy Cooper (not used)
