DOWNHAM PROVE TOO STRONG FOR HARWICH IN THE PLAY OFF FINAL

DOWNHAM PROVE TOO STRONG FOR HARWICH IN THE PLAY OFF FINAL

Terry Francis30 Apr 2023 - 09:35

THE SHRIMPERS GREAT RUN THIS SEASON CAME TO AN END AGAINST A VERY GOOD DOWNHAM TOWN WHO GAINED WELL DESERVED PROMOTION TO THE THURLOW NUNN PREMIER DIVISION

In the glorious spring time sunshine, a crowd of 320 were in holiday mood to witness the match, including a strong contingent of Harwich supporters who had made the trip into Norfolk.
Harwich forced an early corner but in the crowded goalmouth Ben Hammond was unable to get a shot in. It had been an even start to the match but then out of the blue in the 14th minute Downham took the lead with a wonderful 25 yard shot that rocketed into the net giving Shrimpers goalkeeper Brad Cook no chance.
Harwich mounted a good move which ended with Dan Keeble heading over the crossbar and Downham also had a chance following a corner kick.
The Shrimpers defence will be disappointed with Downham's second goal which came in the 30th minute. A through ball caught the Harwich rearguard with no cover and when Brad Cook came out, it was a simple task for the on coming attacker to steer the ball into an empty net.
The Harwich squad had, been depleted in the last 3 matches and the Shrimpers suffered a further blow when Harry Tuck was forced to come off and with Luke Mayhew hampered by injury on the bench, but destined to play no part in the match, Manager Sean Tynan's options were limited.
Skipper Gareth Heath was influential in the Shrimpers midfield and together with Brandon Rusby, made every effort to get his team back into the match and with Harwich going in two goals down at half time, it was vital for them to score next.
It was not to be for Harwich and with a lot spectators still making their way back from the break, Downham hammered home their 3rd goal.
There was no denying that Town, who finished in second place in the league table, 10 points above the Shrimpers, were the better team and Chris Stratton did well to prevent them scoring again with a goal line clearance.
Jordan Heath created an opening for Harwich but Dan Keeble's shot went outside the post and although the Shrimpers were coming more into the game, they lacked the cutting edge to penetrate the well organised Town defence.
In the very last seconds of the game Downham scored their 4th goal and went on to celebrate with their promotion trophy.
Harwich will look back on a fantastic season that culminated in the Play Off Final and be looking to take that step further next season.
