A GOAL FROM A PENALTY KICK IN STOPPAGE TIME MEANT THAT THE SHRIMPERS HAD TO SETTLE FOR A POINT AFTER STERLING PERFORMANCE IN A SUPERB MATCH.

With Nathan Kioussis returning to his position at the centre of the defence in the Shrimpers line-up, Joe Knight was able to go back to leading the attack. Harwich were without injured midfielder Brandon Rusby but welcomed back Luke Mayhew from holiday.
Harwich had the first clear chance when Joe Knight broke through, but United's goalkeeper made a fine diving block to save. Cornard have been pace setters in the promotion race, being undefeated so far this season, and they took the lead in the 13th minute when the Shrimpers defence, under pressure, saw an attempted clearance fall to an attacker who gave goalkeeper Brad Cook no chance with a powerful shot. Harwich levelled the scores 9 minutes later when a good move resulted in a confident finish by Luke Mayhew. Harwich were in top form, creating scoring opportunities and 2 minutes from half time they took the lead with another well taken goal from Luke Mayhew.
Harwich were cock-a-hoop when with the second half only 3 minutes old, Matt Geen out witted United's defence for centre back Jack Wood, whose run forward had been perfectly timed to score at the far post. Cornard reduced the defecit to 3-2 when following a quick break forward, Cook was forced to advance from goal. There was a scare for Harwich when a Cornard shot hit the angle of the post and crossbar. The pace of the game was relentless but with plenty of good football. Joe Knight was causing the home defence problems and was close when from just inside the Cornard half, he saw the keeper off his line and lofted in a shot that was inches wide. Geen, who had the beating of United's defence and the foraging Wood had chances for Harwich. With the game end to end, Harwich fought to hang on to hang to their single goal advantage. Then with the match in stoppage time. a mistimed tackle saw Harwich concede a penalty kick and although Cook dived to get a hand on the ball, he could not prevent Scott Sloots from netting his second goal of the match. United's other scorer was Christian Walsh.
A spirited all-round performance by the Shrimpers which took them to the verge of victory in a thoroughly entertaining match against a very good United team.
