Harwich faced an upbeat Cornard team who had started the season with an excellent victory against a good Downham Market team who had finished in 3rd position in the last seasons league campaign.
Harwich were hoping to get off to a good start but it was United who opened the scoring in the first 15 minutes with a well taken goal from former Shrimper Charlie Lindoe. Cornard were the best team during most of the first half and increased their lead through Jack Graham. Credit to Harwich as they came back strongly in the last fifteen minutes of the first period with Joe Knight reducing the arrears with a shot through a crowded goalmouth. Matt Geen is in great form, playing in a wide position on the wing, and he rounded the goalkeeper to level the scores for Harwich before half time.
It was proving a thriller for the crowd and Knight went close for the Shrimpers with a header which struck the crossbar. In the last quarter of the match Geen gave Harwich the lead with another excellent goal, shooting home from the edge of the penalty area. Substitute Sabini equalised for United and as in the early stages Harwich again found difficulty in containing the speedy Cornard attackers. When United squandered two free kicks from dangerous positions, it seemed that Harwich would at least hold out for a draw but then in the final minutes Scott Sloats grabbed the winner for a jubilant Cornard.
Well done to a very good Cornard team who have made a great start to their season whilst we look to get on track on Saturday when after a lengthy period, we renew our acquaintance with Swaffham Town who were relegated from the Premier Division last season.
