Harwich were without leading goalscorers Jordan Heath, still injured, and Robbie Marks, best man at a wedding. The Shrimpers Managers opted to play one up front and bring in the Reserves leading goalscorer Craig Martin to fill that position. Martin never let them down and gave a performance full of speedy running.
The Shrimpers got off to the worst possible start when after only 2 minutes goalkeeper Scott Wass was unable to hold a shot and the Lads ace marksman James Pickard pounced to put his side ahead. Harwich were finding their new formation difficult and Lawford looked formidable. After 17 minutes Martin put the Shrimpers back in the game with a well taken opportunist goal. The Harwich midfield now got to grips with their task with the impressive Joss Neale pushing forward to support Martin at every opportunity. Lawford were powerful opposition ensuring that an intriguing first half ended all square.
Lawford regained the lead in the 55th minute when Chris Upson powered a free kick through the Harwich defence giving Wass no chance to save. Play was end to end but in the closing stages Harwich mounted a series of strong attacks. In the 75th minute Daryl Eagle looked certain to score but somehow his close range shot was cleared off the goaline. With just 3 minutes remaining Eagle sent over a perfect cross but substitute Ashley Brundle’s header struck the crossbar.
With a rearranged team, up against a team who have made a habit of upsetting the league’s top clubs, Harwich showed much more fight and determination than in Tuesday evenings defeat at the hands of West Bergholt and their efforts really deserved a point.
