NARROW DEFEAT FOR HARWICH DESPITE A GOOD PERFORMANCE

NARROW DEFEAT FOR HARWICH DESPITE A GOOD PERFORMANCE

Terry Francis6 Apr - 21:12

THE RESULT OF A CLOSE-FOUGHT GAME WAS IN DOUBT UNTIL THE FINAL WHISTLE BUT SAFFRON WALDEN LEFT THE OAK WITH A 1-0 VICTORY

On a glorious Bank Holiday Monday, only two minutes had elapsed when, from Luke Mayhew's cross, Town's goalkeeper George Coton did well to save Joe Knight's powerful header.
The Shrimpers' bright start continued with Mayhew again finding Knight who this time shot just wide of the post.
Mayhew was causing the visitors' defence problems and from another of his runs down the right flank, Coton blocked Knight's shot and when the ball came back to the Harwich striker, he was unlucky to see his shot rocket against the post.
With 30 minutes gone, Oakley McNair played in Liam White who crossed for Knight and his header was brilliantly tipped over the crossbar by Coton.
With half time approaching, Town attacked and Shrimpers goalkeeper Brad Cook pulled off a really good block, getting down low to ensure that the match remained goalless at the interval.
Coton was in fine form for Saffron Walden and early in the second half he again prevented his side from going behind when he dived to turn White's fierce, goalbound drive away.

Despite the 0-0 scoreline, there was plenty of action for supporters to enjoy and when Town threatened, it was Cook's turn to shine, tipping the ball around the post at the expense of a corner kick.
As ever, Louie Bloom was a dynamo for Harwich in midfield and attack and from his dangerous cross, the ball was headed out for a corner.
Harwich were temporarily reduced to 10 men when Jack Wood (pictured) was sin-binned, but held their own during his 10-minute abscence.
With 15 minutes of normal time remaining, Saffron Walden made the vital breakthrough when substitute Will Avis fired a well-taken, first-time shot into the corner of the Shrimpers net.
Harwich re-doubled their efforts, forcing Town to defend for the remaining minutes. Once more Knight was thwarted by Coton's skill, the keeper managing to block his shot. Finally, Knight's header was blocked and from the resultant corner, Harwich's luck was out when Wood's shot struck the crossbar.
Harwich team: Brad Cook, Oakley McNair, Charlie Canham, Jack Wood, Reece Harte, Tyler Sullivan, Jenson Goode, Liam White, Louie Bloom, Luke Mayhew and Joe Knight. Substitutes: Tiwa Odufuye, Zack Pedro, Tom Watkins (all used), Mo Hashemi and Jack Cosby (not used).
