NARROW DEFEAT FOR HARWICH IN BBC ESSEX SENIOR CUP

NARROW DEFEAT FOR HARWICH IN BBC ESSEX SENIOR CUP

Terry Francis19 Nov - 12:01

The Shrimpers were beaten by the only goal of the match at Tilbury but were in with a chance of causing an upset until the final whistle.

At the last-16 stage, Harwich were the lowest-ranked team remaining in the Essex Senior Cup and faced a tough task away to Tilbury as they looked to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 45 years.
From the start, Isthmian League Tilbury created dangerous attacks down the flanks and produced several crosses from which they came close to scoring.
With 15 minutes gone, Harwich created their best chance when they won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area but from Luke Mayhew's low shot, the Dockers' goalkeeper Connor Wheatley made an excellent diving save.
Five minutes later, Tilbury took the lead with a speedy, well-worked goal and a controlled finish by Kieran Jones, who played a handful of games for the Shrimpers during the 2019/20 season.

Alex Balisani on the left wing was Tilbury's star player and his shot was cleared off the goal-line by full-back Oakley McNair.
Harwich were happy to go in at the interval only one goal in arrears but battled well in the second half and came more into the game.
Alfie Canning (pictured) was prominent for the Shrimpers and he came close with a shot that went inches over the crossbar.
With Shrimpers goalkeeper Brad Cook in top form, thwarting Tilbury's efforts to score a second goal, Harwich had hopes of snatching a late equaliser but could not create the opening which would have taken the game to a penalty shoot-out.
Harwich team: Brad Cook, Oakley McNair, Teddy Johnson, Jack Wood, Tiwa Odufuye, Alfie Eldridge, Gareth Heath, Alfie Canning, Luke Mayhew, Zachary Pedro and Shaun Avis. Substitutes: Tom Watkins, Will Crook and Reece Harte (all used).
