Report by Terry Francis and Colin Rogers
After only 5 minutes of this Essex Senior Cup tie, a move started by a long ball from full-back Oakley McNair was headed on by Alfie Canning to give James Letts a golden one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper Andrew Zambrano, but the Shrimpers midfielder put his shot wide of the post.
A few minutes later, Buckhurst Hill also had an attacker in a good position but his shot was too high.
The next chance came in the 30th minute when Canning's shot was deflected to McNair who cut in only for his left-foot shot to go inches over the crossbar.
Three minutes later Buckhurst Hill took the lead when the influential Reece Simpson's effort was deflected into the net by a defender.
Harwich started the second half brightly and were rewarded with an equalising goal in the 48th minute when from an angle Luke Mayhew fired a fierce cross into the far corner of the net.
Buckhurst Hill came back with a header that went just over the crossbar but Harwich were pressing forward and Zambrano did really well to keep out McNair's long-range effort that was heading for the top corner.

Buckhurst Hill were providing spirited opposition and Harwich goalkeeper Brad Cook also distinguished himself with a superb reaction stop when the ball was hammered in from close range.
With full time and a penalty shoot-out looming, Harwich won the game when Mayhew crossed to the far post where Jack Wood was the hero, with beautifully executed header that looped over Zambrano's head (pictured).
The late goal sends the Shrimpers into the hat for the second-round draw, which is expected to take place on August 29.
