REPORT BY COLIN ROGERS
The opening quarter of an hour was battled out in midfield before Harwich's first chance came via a move started by skipper Gareth Heath, who sent Alfie Canning away and from his cross to Danny Garrad, the Rangers keeper made a point-blank stop.
The Shrimpers went close again when from Heath's corner kick Canning headed just over the crossbar.
Rangers came back, winning a corner kick which resulted in a shot that went just past the post.
Harwich were creating more chances and from Liam White's excellent through ball, Luke Mayhew dragged his shot wide.
The game - watched by pop star Olly Murs, who has links with KPR - was proving to have a derby flavour, physical and competitive.
Harwich took the lead in the 30th minute when from another well-placed Heath corner, Canning eluded the Rangers defenders for a tap in at the far post.
Although Harwich were ahead on chances, Rangers were well in the game and equalised 7 minutes later when the vastly experienced Dev Cunningham whipped in a free kick that was headed home by Callum Tracey.
Rangers had brought a big squad with them and at half time they made full use of their substitutes in a rearranged line-up.
Whilst still competitive, the second half produced flowing moves from both teams.
Harwich took the lead in the 70th minute with a well-worked move. It was started by a long kick from goalkeeper Brad Cook which saw Heath exchange passes with White who then found Canning, who tucked his shot past the visitors' keeper.
Shrimpers boss Matt Carmichael used his substitutes and will have been pleased with their performances, especially Under-18 attackers Jack Elvestad and Cody Harrison who late in the game combined to come close to producing a third Harwich goal.
Both teams did well in the hot conditions to maintain the pace for 90 minutes and in their league Rangers are going to be a strong force as they push for promotion to Step 6.
As for the Shrimpers, they will conclude their pre-season campaign with a home game against another Border League Premier Division side, Thorpe Athletic, this Tuesday (kick-off 7.45pm).
It will be the last prep ahead of the new Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League season which starts on Tuesday July 30 with a trip to Wivenhoe Town.
