THE SHRIMPERS MAINTAINED THEIR PROMOTION CHALLENGE TO OVERCOME A DETERMINED BLOATERS TEAM.

Report by Colin Rogers.
Yarmouth attacked in the early minutes and Harwich full back Dan Keeble did well to avert the danger at the expense of a corner. There followed a battle for midfield supremacy but in the 20th minute it was Harwich turn to mount a dangerous raid when skipper Gareth Heath passed to Luke Mayhew who cut inside before firing in a fierce shot which goalkeeper Reuben Lane did well to get down to and make a fine stop.
28 minutes had gone when Ben Hammond sent Joe Knight off to run through the visitors defence only for Lane to pull him down on the edge of the penalty area. A clear goal scoring chance resulting in goalkeeper Lane being sent off. The free kick came to nothing but 2 minutes from half time Harwich took the lead when Alfie Smith netted with a looping header that went in just under the crossbar.
Regan Perry had replaced Lane in the Yarmouth goal and despite being down to 10 men, the Bloaters came out for the second half determined to make a fight of it. Shrimpers goalkeeper Brad Cook dived to get a hand on a goal bound shot and the alert Dan Keeble cleared the loose ball to safety. Harwich full back Archie Corner tested substitute goalkeeper Perry with a shot which was well saved. Harwich were also reduced to 10 men for the period of Jack Wood's sin bin offence. Brad Cook's long throw through found Joe Knight and from his cross Archie Corner fired in another good shot, once again for Perry to prove that he was no slouch between the sticks by turning the effort over the crossbar.
With 70 minutes gone Ben Hammond was fouled and from more than 25 yards Shaun Kioussis free-kick rocketed into the top corner of the net for a super second goal for Harwich.
Playing the second half with 10 men, Yarmouth had given a gutsy performance to make Harwich fight hard for the victory but the Shrimpers were pleased to secure 3 more points in a tight race for automatic or play off places.
This was a land mark match being Gareth Heath's 200th appearance for Harwich & Parkeston. After the game Chairman Tony Armstrong presided over a ceremony to mark the occasion with Gareth's long time mentor Tony Shaw presenting the Harwich captain with a signed ball, shirt, and champagne. Gareth started his illustrious career at Harwich & Parkeston before moving up the pyramid and the Club are delighted that he has chosen to return and prove to be still such a potent force.
Harwich team: Brad Cook, Dan Keeble, Archie Corner, Ben Hammond, Jack Wood, Steve Polley, Alfie Smith Shaun Kioussis, Gareth Heath, Luke Mayhew and Joe Knight. Substitutes: Harry Tuck, Brandon Rusby and Ryan Smart.
