With both teams currently in play positions in their respective North and South Divisions of the League, this entertaining cup-tie proved a nail biter.
Harwich took the lead in the 30th minute when from Gareth Heath's corner kick Ben Hammond netted with a well placed header. Ten minutes later Jamie Bradbourn equalised with a shot from close range and the first half ended with nothing to choose between the teams.
The Shrimpers created chances after the break with both Rob Pratt and Jack Wood going close with headers. The match continued to be played at a cracking pace with both teams going for a victory, providing the crowd of 130 spectators with a riveting encounter.
In the 80th minute Basildon went in front when Keano Hill's shot took a wicked deflection Harwich were in to mood to give up and a minute later Joe Knight levelled the scores with a spectacular shot on the run for a difficult angle. There was still time for the Shrimpers to have a strong shout for a penalty kick when Gareth Heath was brought down but despite their appeals the Assistant Referee kept his flag down.
In the shoot out Harwich second penalty kick struck the crossbar and this was to prove decisive.
The Shrimpers can be proud having given everything in their efforts and our best wishes go to Basildon Town who now seek a place in the Semi Finals.
