Harwich Managers Sean Tynan and Gary Kioussis faced a problem with skipper Gareth Heath, attackers Luke Mayhew, Matt Geen and Rob Pratt all unavailable through work commitments but did have defenders returning. Mark Palmer was moved to a forward position, Jamie Eades wide and winger Harvey Evans made his debut.
Basildon put Harwich under pressure from the start and poor defending allowed them to take the lead in the 15th minute with a shot angled between the post and the crossbar which gave goalkeeper Brad Cook no chance. Harwich couldn't get their game together but there was a hint of an offside about Town's second goal. Mark Palmer showed a possible way back for Harwich when he cleverly created two openings, but the Shrimpers were unable to take advantage. Harwich attacks were only sparodic whilst Basildon could have had the result wrapped up by half time had they taken all of their chances.
As it was at 2-0 down, Harwich only needed a goal to be back in contention in the second half and Joe Knight skimmed the crossbar with a header. This was to be the nearest that the Shrimpers came and more poor marking in defence saw Town score their third goal. Harwich had tried hard but were at sixes and sevens now with Basildon scoring two more goals to run out easy winners.
Basildon Town had given an impressive performance and we wish them the very best in the next round.
Thank you to our supporters who made the journey through the heavy rush hour traffic.
