Harwich pressure in the 10th minute saw the Referee consult his Assistant and sent off an Earls Colne player following an apparent head butt. Harwich missed chances but in the 24th minute Matt Geen pounced on a defender's misplaced pass and netted the Shrimpers first goal with a cool finish. Earles Colne battled well and Jake Neale prevented an equaliser when headed off the goaline. It looked as though Harwich might pay for missed chances when Josh Preston levelled the scores in the 40 minute but 3 minutes later and excellent pass from Geen saw Sam Thompson restore the Shrimpers lead with a cracking shot.
Harwich scored an important third goal within a minute of the second half when Brad Westley neatly diverted a cross into the roof of the net. Earls Colne fought well to try to get back and in the 70th minute Harwich keeper Sam Quinn made a fine double save. Two minutes later Westley put the result beyond doubt when he converted Harry Johnson's dangerous cross. In the last minute Geen notched the Shrimpers fifth goal and the Shrimpers had their first victory of the new season.
