With a roaring gusting wind at their backs, Harwich found conditions difficult during the first half and were unable to get a telling shot on target. Barnston did a little better but failed to trouble Shrimpers keeper Sam Felgate who was carrying an injury. There were only a couple of real chances during this period with Matt Geen making a great run through the home defence before having the ball snatched from his toes and Branston's skipper Jordan Miller hitting the post with his 40th minute shot.
After the break Harwich found that facing the wind was much more to their liking and passing the ball well, created a number of scoring opportunities. For the Shrimpers, Ashley Wood's high long shot was just wide with goalkeeper Sam Kendle beaten and later he saved well from Jake Neale's header. Geen and Elliott combined well and Kendle dived to save and Neale shot over from Dom Nea's neat flick as Harwich pressed. Wood's accurate free kick was put into the side netting by Nea as Harwich frustration continued. At last the Shrimpers persistence paid off with Elliott hammering the ball into the net. In injury time Branston almost snatched a point when Miller's shot struck the crossbar but with their excellent second half performance Harwich deserved victory.
