It was just the start that Harwich didn't want with the Universtiy mounting a smart move in the 4th minute and netting a goal the left keeper Sam Felgate helpless to intervene. Harwich had a chance when the University's defence was stretched but the home keeper narrowly beat Darren Bethell in a race for the ball. Felgate then made a fine diving save at the expense of a corner. University increased their lead in the 15th minute when the Harwich defence was caught napping and a cross resulted in a easy goal at the far post. This was a signal for University to take complete control and by half time they had established an unasailable 5-0 lead. Harwich stayed on the pitch at half time for Manager John Fidgett to try to negate the damage with a strong talk. The Shrimpers did respond by forming a much more compact unit in the second half and competing much better. University added one goal to their tally during this period and will have been happy with their dominant first half display whilst Harwich will regret their poor first half performance.
