Harwich played some neat football during the first half but with the Islanders defending well could not get in any telling shots for the first 30 minutes. Darren Cook had a snap chance when the Mersea keeper was stranded on the edge of his area but his shot was just wide. In the 36th minute Harwich took the lead with a stunning goal when Ashley Wood from 25 yards out in a wide position cannoned in his shot off the far post. Within 2 minutes Mersea were level and again it was a shot going in off the post with Adam Pasfield the scorer.
The second half was only a few minutes old when the Shrimpers were back in the lead with the best move of the match with Robbie May exchanging passes with Darren Cook before netting. Mersea lost their keeper with a hand injury but the substitute could not be blamed for goal spree that followed. Mersea did well to equalise again with a smart break and neat finish from a cross by James Rutter. This was a signal for Harwich to snap into top gear in front of goal. Ashley Wood showed his prowess with two more excellent goals to complete his hat trick whilst Robbie Marks returned to his best form to also notch a hat trick.
An impressive performance from Harwich and with the goals going in a boost for their confidence.
