Harwich started well and there were a couple of early half chances to score for Robbie Marks. Both teams were fired up for the game and Gas Rec replied forcing Shrimpers keeper Scott Wass to make a fine save. Gas Rec took the lead in the 20th minute when Rob Thorne beat Wass with a well struck 20 yard drive. The Gas Rec keeper handled a back pass and from the free kick Darren Bethell’s shot passed just outside the far post. Harwich equalised two minutes before half time when full back Michael Palmer made a surging run forward and scored with a spectacular 25 yard shot into the roof of the net.
Ten minutes into the second half Thorne pounced on a defensive mistake to restore Gas Rec’s lead with a well placed shot from an acute angle. It was an entertaining game with play switching from end to end and Harwich deservedly levelled the scores again in the 80th minute when skipper Michael Maclachlan created the opening for Marks to deftly roll the ball into the net. Both sides then strove for a winner and it was Gas Rec who got the break with Jay West netting to secure all 3 points for his jubilant team.
