Thurrock were the best team in the first half but missed a golden opportunity to take the lead when McNamara’s tame penalty kick was easily saved by goalkeeper Scott Wass.
Thurrock deservedly took the lead in the 60 the minute when Jamie Dicks followed up after Wass had dived to push out a shot. The Shrimpers then began to get the measure of their speedy opponents and had the home defence in trouble with Robbie Marks and Ben Hammond having efforts scrambled off the goal line. Harwich went close again when Daryl Johnston’s header hit the post but then in the 75th minute were rewarded when from a long pass from Wass, Darren Bethell split open the Thurrock defence for Marks to shoot a superbly taken equaliser. Harwich went all out for the winner and Tom Brannan’s shot struck the crossbar. It was an exciting finale and with 3 minutes remaining when Daryl Hinks shot was blocked, Bethell fired in the winner for a jubilant Harwich. The Shrimpers are away again in the next round, this time to Tiptree Jobserve.
