Harwich fought hard but found playing with 10 men for 70 minutes too high a mountain to climb.

The turning point of this match came as early as the 18th minute when Mark Palmer was sent off for what the Referee considered an over forceful tackle. Palmer and Bergholt’s Tony White challenged for a loose ball and after a delay the Referee dismissed the Harwich midfielder. Chas Hammerton and Marlon North gave West Bergholt a two goal interval lead but Harwich were back in the game in the 48th minute when Tom Brannans free kick was deftly guided into the net by Jimmy Chatters to reduce the lead. Harwich were not able to hang on to this boost and two minutes latter Gary Melwaine restored Bergholt’s two goal cushion. The Shrimpers tired in the closing stages and their goalkeeper Scott Wass came smartly out on two occasions to save his side. Gary Gibson hit the bar for Bergholt but Harwich looked to have prevented any further reverses until the very last minute when substitute Jason Dalziel netted the home side’s fourth goal.
