Tony Armstrong becomes club's latest life member

Andrew Schooler27 Oct - 22:26

Current joint-chairman received life membership of HPFC on Saturday.

On the day Harwich and Parkeston celebrated its 150th anniversary, club legend Tony Armstrong was made a life member of the club.
Tony has served as a player, manager and chairman at the Royal Oak. Following last week's annual general meeting, he is now joint-chairman, alongside Colin Rogers.
The 74-year-old usually hands out such awards himself but on Saturday he was the recipient of life membership at the request of the club’s committee.
Secretary Andy Schooler presented his fellow committee member with a special certificate and gave a speech during which he said: “Few people can have played as a big a part in the club’s history as he has. As a player, manager and chairman, he has kept the club going, even through its darkest days.”

Tony moved to the town in 1954 when his father, Eric, became manager of the Shrimpers.
He made 293 apparances as a goalkeeper between 1969 and 1979 and, after quitting playing, became manager for the first time. Other spells at the helm followed.
Having spent the 1990s away from the club, Tony returned at the end of 2001 when he found the club in a perilous state and gathered some like-minded individuals in a bid to keep the club going. He became chairman shortly afterwards, a role he has remained in for the vast majority of the ensuing years.
Other life members of the club currently include record appearance-maker Mick Clarke, Reg Smith, Sean Tynan, Gary Kioussis, Terry Francis, Carl Allen, Andy Schooler, John Wallace and Steve Devaux.
