On behalf of Harwich and Parkeston FC, I am very sad to announce the sudden passing of Club legend Barry Vernon on Friday afternoon.
The Club are in deep shock as Barry was a major part of this Club for over 50 years. He was respected throughout the local football scene and his knowledge and motivation was very instrumental in the revival of the Club when it was hovering on the brink of folding in 2001 with major financial problems.
He started as a supporter in 1967 following the fortunes of his great friend Mick Clarke, who was starting to play at the Club. Barry became first-aid man with the first team around 1973, a position he filled for many years.
After a break, he returned to the Club in 2001. He was still serving on the Committee up to his sad death on Friday. He also had a spell as Chairman too.
I had the privilege of knowing Barry since I was 15 years old. He was always available for me to turn to for advice and guidance in reviving Harwich and Parkeston fortunes. He was the first to buy players a beer after matches and was truly loved by everyone, not only at the Club but throughout local football. Everyone knew Barry Vernon!
He was a valued friend to everyone. Harwich and Parkeston has lost a Club legend and I have lost a lifelong friend. RIP Barry. You will never be forgotten!
